- Deck Fastener Roundup
The weather is warming up, the days are lasting longer, and deck-building season is on the way. Reliable fasteners help builders hold it all together. Here’s a look at some of the latest and greatest deck-building fasteners for your next big outdoor project. U2 Universal Screws Want a “deck screw on steroids?” That’s how U2 Fasteners describes its enhanced Universal Screw, ideal for replacing those old, failing deck screws. Made of case-hardened carbon steel, these self-starting screws feature U2’s trademark Tight Star Recess, so they grip the matching U-bit so tightly they allow for one-handed installation. Underneath the Universal head, special Burrow Pockets are dynamically engineered to help countersink into the toughest of materials. This screw is designed to drive and secure into the many types of materials used in residential construction, and they’re available in sizes ranging from 1/2 to 12 inches, as well as in an assortment of stainless 316 versions. www.u2fasteners.com Cap-Sure CCD Screws For composite decking lovers, Sure Drive USA offers the Cap-Sure Capstock Composite Deck Screws that are color-matched for leading decking suppliers such as Trex, MoistureShield and others. They’re available in 2-1/2 and 3-in. lengths and feature the popular star-drive bit system. The undercut trim head traps loose material, and the top threads push composite material back into the decking, so there’s no “mushrooming” effect. Sure-Drive also offers Copperguard Deck Screws in tan and redwood colors to match pressure-treated and redwood decking. www.suredrive.com U2 Construction Screws For heavy-duty applications, the U2 Construction Screw (aka the CS Screw) is the next generation of structural screw that is replacing lag screws. It features a dome head for enhanced structural strength, a self-starting tapper point, and “Talon Grip” nibs beneath the head that prevent loosening when countersunk. Plus, the Reamer Thread enlarges the hole in the material to reduce tension on the screw head when drawing materials together. The CS Screw is a gnarly, fast-driving and reliable choice for installing ledger boards, anchoring beams, and other such heavy-duty construction tasks. www.u2fasteners.com Mantis Clips When it comes to hidden fasteners in grooved deck boards, Sure-Drive USA offers one of the easiest solutions to install—the Mantis Clip. By using the Eliminator RCS pneumatic tool with its EZ-Slide attachment, you can install the Mantis Clips using Ballistic Nail Screws up to 75 percent faster than conventional methods. (Mantis fasteners can also be installed using standard hand-drive screws.) Made in the USA of high-tensile coated steel, the Mantis Clips come in a choice of four profiles, so you can choose the best fit for your deck board. And unlike other clips on the market, the Mantis is built with a base that promotes airflow to protect the deck structure. Sure Dive USA is so confident the Mantis Clips prevent lateral movement and uplift that the company backs the installation with a 30-year warranty against loose deck boards. www.suredrive.com CAMO Edge Clips For hidden fasteners in grooved decking, the CAMO Edge Clips install wood, composite, capped composite and PVC deck boards. The two-component fasteners can be installed in a single pass to create a 3/16-in. gap, and a handy screw guide is included with each box of fasteners. According to CAMO, the Edge Clips are proven to be 88 percent stronger in lateral movement tests than the leading deck board manufacturer’s clips. To fasten deck boards at an angle over the joists, go with the CAMO EdgeX Clips, which install the same way. Or, you can even install hidden fasteners over metal framing, with the latest CAMO innovation, the EdgeX Metal Clips, which can fasten any angled installation of grooved decking over any 14–18GA metal framing, including Fortress Evolution and Trex Elevations. CAMO Drive Stand-up Tool Install decking up to 5X faster with the CAMO Drive cordless stand-up deck fastening tool that attaches to your drill. It can be used for three fastening methods—Edge, Clip, and Face fastening—on any deck board surface. The tool has a reversible handle, it’s easy to swap out nose pieces, and is quick to reload with fasteners. It is designed for exclusive use with CAMO Collated Deck Screws, EDGE Clips, EDGEX Clips, and EDGEXMETAL Clips. (Not for use with impact drivers.) www.camofasteners.com Deck2wall Spacers The deck-ledger connection is notoriously susceptible to rot, which can dangerously affect the stability and support of the deck. Deck2wall Spacers help prevent rot from occurring by separating the ledger from the supporting structure, providing a path for water and debris to flow harmlessly through the assembly, while promoting circulation and drying. Stacked washers have often been used as spacers over lag bolts, but Deck2wall Spacers have attachment holes to keep them in perfect alignment for faster and easier installation. They offer more bearing surface than washers for better load distribution, and the plastic spacers are non-corrosive. Plus, the one-piece design and installation method provide superior waterproofing. Deck2Wall Spacers also work as a long-lasting solution for attaching shade structures, posts, stair stringers, landings, built-up beams or mechanical equipment. Made in the USA and available in two sizes, the spacers are injection-molded, fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene. The original Model D2W58 is 5/8-in. thick with a 2-1/2-in. diameter and a 11/16-in. bolt hole (use #6-8 corrosion resistant screws in attachment holes). The smaller version, Deck2wall Spacer model SWS, is now approved for installation with SPAX PowerLags. Based on testing conducted by SPAX, the 1/2-in. thick x 2-in. diameter SWS spacer is now included in the updated PowerLags deck ledger fastening table. The approved screws are available in 5/16- and 3/8-in. diameter, and have two different head types to choose from, T-STAR and HEX drive. As structural wood screws become more popular each year for deck ledger installations, so has the SWS spacer. The updated PowerLags fastening table is accompanied by an engineering letter, and is available at www.deck2wallspacer.com DeckWise Hardwood Wrench Got bent or warped boards? Straighten them with the Hardwood Wrench from DeckWise, makers of the Ipe Clip hidden fastener for hardwood decks. The tool is easy to operate for a single deck installer, offering many benefits over other methods of straightening deck boards. All it takes is a simple swing of the Hardwood Wrench™ tool's handle and it will make even an extremely bowed board straight as an arrow. www.deckwise.com Shadoe Track The HIR staff has re-decked a large project using this unique track-based system, which installs along the upper edge of the joists and fastens to the deck boards from beneath. Note that this system requires installers to have working room beneath the deck surface. Available in powder-coated colors or stainless steel, this versatile system can work with any type of deck-board material. The Shadoe Track system is backed by Sure Drive USA’s 30-year warranty against loose deck boards. www.suredrive.com #deck #decks #deckbuilder #deckconstruction #deckbuilder #deckfastener #hiddenfastener #hiddenfasteners #decking #compositedeck #deckframing #decktools
- Top 5 Tools Every Homeowner Should Rent
Whether you’re tackling a small honey-do repair, or taking on a major home-improvement project, having the right tools makes it possible to work on projects you never thought were possible, no matter your skill level. If you’re ready to tackle your next DIY project, but don’t want to go all in on purchasing multiple tools that you may only use once, renting the tools you need could be your best solution. When making the choice between tool rental and buying, consider a few factors: storage, budget, and usage. Renting tools allows you to use the specific tool you need, for less money, without having to worry about it gathering dust in your garage or shed. According to the American Rental Association (ARA), there are hundreds of tools you could rent for a variety of projects. The ARA has detailed the top five tools used by DIY’ers when working in and around their homes—floor sander, paint sprayer, power auger, ground tiller, and pressure washer—and what you need to know to get the most from these popular rental tools. Floor Sander If you’ve got solid wood floors, maintaining the finish is a must after years of wear and tear. Did you know that depending on the type of hardwood floors in your home, they can be refinished up to 10 times before a complete replacement is needed? Unless you have a friend or neighbor who owns a floor sander, rental is likely your best option since this equipment is expensive to buy. With a floor sander rental, returning the luster to your hardwood flooring has become a much more accessible project for the average homeowner. There are two primary types of floor sanders: orbital and drum. Before tackling your refinishing project, it’s important to know the differences between the two sanders to properly complete your job. Orbital floor sanders are more popular for DIY hardwood refinishing. An orbital floor sander allows you to reach the edges and corners, so in many cases renting an edger is not needed. Orbital floor sanders oscillate to sand the surface, eliminating the need to follow the grain of the wood as you work. If you are looking to remove deeper scratches, you will need to make multiple passes, which does take time. Be sure to take your time, as rushing can cause errors. Moving too quickly, not waiting for the sander to reach the full speed before lowering it to the floor, or turning it off while it’s on the floor can all result in damage. Drum floor sanders can make quick work of sanding but can be challenging to use for beginners and present the highest risk of causing damage. Drum floor sanders require a constant, steady pace, following the grain of the wood. Changing pace or stopping—even for a moment—-can cause gouge marks or valleys. It’s best to practice on a testing surface for anyone new to floor sanding. An edge sander is often rented for the same projects as a drum floor sander to sand the edges around baseboards. When visiting your local rental store, be sure to consult the rental professionals on which type of sander fits your comfort level and flooring needs. They can also help you with selecting the proper sanding grit and may offer training before you start your project. Paint Sprayer A fresh coat of paint can dramatically change a space, but not too many homeowners get excited about the thought of buying the rollers and drop cloths for a painting session. Renting a paint sprayer could be the answer to adding an accent wall or giving your kitchen cabinets a fresh color in less time, and with a professional looking finish. Paint sprayers take a little practice, but once you’re comfortable, the result is smooth and much less time-consuming than traditional painting. With the time and energy saved using a rented paint sprayer, you can paint additional rooms, closet doors, shutters, patio furniture or anything else that needs a fresh finish or color. Paint sprayers are also an option for staining your deck or fence in less time and with less cleanup than a manual application. With a variety of paint sprayers on the market, it’s important to have the correct one for your project. Be sure to consult the rental professionals at your local rental store on which type of sprayer you need. Some paint sprayers are equipped with multiple spray patterns and pressures and may require paint to be thinned for best results. Your rental partner may also assist with calculating the amount of paint needed based on the size and type of surface. For instance, one gallon of paint will cover about 150 to 200 square feet of wall when applied with a paint sprayer. Power Auger Ready to finally fix that sagging section of your fence or add a deck to your outdoor oasis? Save yourself time and trouble by avoiding the manual posthole digger and go straight for the power auger rental. The corkscrew-like machine can give you deeper holes for your fence posts or deck structure in a fraction of the time with virtually no back strain. Power augers come in one-person and two-person sizes, depending on how large of a hole you may need and what type of soil you have. A knowledgeable rental consultant can make sure you have the appropriate auger bits, bit extensions, digging bar and other accessories that you will need to complete your project successfully. Rotary Tiller Setting up a home garden or giving your grass a refresher has never been easier with a rotary tiller. Since this is a tool you only need once or twice a year, renting is ideal to keep coveted garage space available for other items. Rent a rotary tiller in the spring to loosen soil for planting season or to get a big yard ready for additional seeding or sod installation. Renting a tiller also allows you to spend less time digging deeper than is possible with a shovel, and when fall rolls around, you won’t be bothered with finding storage space in your shed. Pressure Washer Dirt, mold and mildew can live on the interior and exterior surfaces of your home, even if you can’t see it, which is why it’s important to keep your house clean. One way to revitalize a wide variety of outdoor surfaces is to remove years of dirt with a pressure washer. Pressure washers work by using a pump to increase the pressure of water flowing through the hose to help bring your home’s exterior back to life. There are a lot of uses for a pressure washer, some that you might not even think of. Many homeowners use pressure washers for their driveways, as well as other concrete surfaces, to help spruce up the overall curb appeal quickly. Once your concrete patio or deck has been pressure washed, consider using the tool to clean your patio furniture to make it look brand new again. Another use of pressure washers is to remove dirt and buildup from vinyl siding, stucco or brick to clean your home’s exterior. Pressure washers can even get grime off your garbage cans without having to scrub them by hand. With so many uses, how do you decide when to rent a pressure washer and when to buy one? If you plan on using it often, a pressure washer may be more cost-effective to buy. Storing, maintaining, or even winterizing depending on where you live, can be a hassle when owning a pressure washer. If skipping the storage and care required is a better option, look to your local rental store to rent a pressure washer as needed. Best Practices for Tool Rental DIY projects can pay off in many ways, but you still want your efforts to be efficient. Tool rental stores understand how important tools are to completing your projects as quickly and easily as possible. They offer tools for the most common DIY home improvement and repair projects as well as specialty tools. Not every rental provider carries the same tool and equipment inventory, so check around to find the best tools to match your project goals. How to Find Rental Tools Use RentalHQ.com or get the RentalHQ app to find rental tools near you. Enter your desired tool and location into the search fields to find local rental stores to meet your needs. - Roofing Work: DIY or Why Not?
When it comes to roof work on a house, can you do it yourself? It might be physically possible but it’s highly inadvisable. I know this, because I’ve attempted it. As the editor of this magazine, I take pride in having some actual working knowledge of the topics we cover, so a few years ago I took a stab at installing new architectural asphalt shingles on my house by myself. I’ll never make that mistake again. From traversing the slope and dreading the heights to the grueling work of lugging the heavy materials all over the roof, I learned there’s a very good reason you see roofers work in multi-man crews. Furthermore, inexperience can lead to errors, and it’s critical to avoid any hidden errors in a newly replaced roof. After a couple of days working on the roof, I was aching in parts of my body I'd forgotten I possessed. I also realized that the higher I climbed away from the ground, the more I hated the job. I got so fed up with the workload that by the time I made it up to the ridge, I called a roofing contractor to finish up the second half on the higher side of the house. Suffice it to say I’d learned what I set out to learn: I don't like roofing and I sure as heck am no one-man crew. However, houses aren’t the only buildings that have roofs. Storage sheds, carports, workshops and other smaller single-level outbuildings are much more accessible and make for a safer work environment and a more digestible project size. That’s where HIR recommends inexperienced roofer installers flex their DIY muscles. Keep in mind, however, that no matter what type of roofing material you choose, if the material is not installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, then the manufacturer isn’t obligated to honor the product warranty in the event of a problem. So, study up and follow all installation instructions to the letter ... or else call a reputable pro. — M. - New Insulation Tech Makes Life Easier for Installers
(guest post courtesy of Maureen Murray) When Nathan Leatherman started OD&M Insulation of New Oxford, PA, 12 years ago, he and his crew were firing on all cylinders to handle multi-families and track homes. Now, the father-son run business is focused on custom builders and gutted remodels. Nathan, his son Owen, and another full-time worker, Josiah, handle about two insulation jobs per day. For the past two years, he has transitioned to working with custom builders and remodelers, covering the region of South Central PA – from Adams, York, and the Rt. 81 corridor from Harrisburg to Carlisle, PA. “I was trying to handle the bigger jobs and it was just not worth the hassle of trying to hire and adjust schedules,” said Nathan. “My workers were sometimes making more than I was, so it was getting crazy.” As labor issues grip the industry, Nathan has navigated through it by running more lean and going smaller. “My builders will work with me around the schedule and with two weeks’ notice, I can space the jobs out, whereas track builders are on such a tight timeframe they have labor and scheduling issues.” Part of working with a smaller crew means that materials have to be easy to handle and install, saving time and labor. Purchasing at Lowes, OD&M relies on fiberglass batt as the main material of choice, and Nathan recently discovered a new fiberglass insulation product with advanced fiber technology that just launched in August 2021 by Owens Corning. PINK Next Gen™ Fiberglas™ is a batt insulation product that solves many installation issues, according to Nathan, who has already completed 15 houses with it. “Fiberglass has a come a long way and is totally different from 15 or 20 years ago.” “We always look for efficiency to get the job done right,” he said. “PINK Next Gen™ Fiberglas™ is definitely a gentler insulation material. It’s soft to the touch and the pieces don’t stick to you.” “Recovery out of the package is also a must for the OD&M crew to move from one job to another without delays. “This material springs out the package and puffs right back up, and stands up stiff to set right into the wall cavity,” he said. “It fits tight even in the corners—and slides right into the wall cavity. What a time saver!” Another handling issue Nathan mentioned is much less waste, mess and dust. Educating customers on material innovation is a continuing effort for Nathan and his crew. “Fiberglass has a come a long way and is totally different from 15 or 20 years ago,” he said. “There were older, cheaper fiberglass materials that were rough to handle, especially in the industrial sector. For that reason, we have to re-educate customers —the builder and homeowner—about the next generation of materials.” He said there’s nothing more frustrating for his team than to have to keep going over and over the batt with a knife and having it get chewed up. He noted that the PINK Next Gen™ Fiberglas™ batt material cuts cleanly without tearing or snapping, and without the raggedy edges, which home inspectors don’t like to see. “When it’s installed, inspectors see a nice, smooth surface and homeowners like the smooth look for exposed areas like utility areas of the basement.” He said that with the new fiber technology, "you cut and insert the batt, so you can save an hour or two on each job, which results in a couple hundred bucks saved. I would say it’s much faster than the previous product for sure, less time and labor and easier inspections.” Since Nathan worked in the large track home sector, he recalls that pros and homeowner expectations are higher and codes stricter today. “These days the houses have to be so dang tight,” he said. “We’re always looking to pass the Blower Door Test, which tests how much air is coming through the house and it needs to pass for the R-Value. We use the R-21 fiberglass batt and find it a great value, so why wouldn’t you use fiberglass?” For customers, OD&M finds they do care about safe ingredients and sustainability, possibly because of the COVID lockdown and focus on indoor air quality. “Safe ingredients matter,” he said. “Our customers want to know what is behind the walls and in the attic. And since we are touching this stuff every day, we need to feel comfortable with it.” Nathan points to Owens Corning’s use of recycled materials in their fiberglass batt, and no fire retardants because fiberglass is non-combustible. It’s also GreenGuard approved for low VOCs. According to Nathan, insulation is one of the most important parts of a home. With a whole house approach of energy efficient HVAC systems, air sealing and upgraded fiberglass, it can save on their current heating and cooling bills. Nathan summed it up: “That can translate into reduced callbacks for us or our builders! Who doesn’t love to save on energy and add comfort at the same time?” For more information on Owens Corning’s PINK Next Gen™ Fiberglas™ visit PINKNextGen.com. #pink_insulation #fiberglas #fiberglassinsulation #pinkinsulation #insulation #battinsulation #batt_insulation #installation
- 5 Tips for Building Pressure-Treated Decks
These five pro-grade construction tips will help anyone working on a treated wood deck to build it even better. 1. Joists—If it's necessary to install or replace a joist, be sure to inspect the board for its crown. Dimensional lumber is rarely perfectly straight, and the "crown" is the board's natural curvature when looking down the board's narrowest edge. The crown will give the board a slight bowed or arc shape, and when used as a deck joist, it's important to orient the high mid-point of the arc at the top to prevent sagging in the deck surface. Fasten the ends of deck joists to ledger boards, beams or rim joists, using metal hangers secured with code-approved nails or screws. 2. Flashing Tape—For the best long-term weather protection, cover the tops of joists and framing members with a self-adhering tape used as flashing. These butyl or asphalt tapes protect fastener holes from moisture by acting as a non-corrosive barrier between treated lumber and metal hardware. 3. Decking—Before installing the deck boards, inspect their ends for the tree's growth rings. In general, it's best to install the boards bark-side up to reduce cupping. However, some boards that are cut closer to the core of the tree have a straighter, tighter grain, and therefore less cupping. 4. Shrinkage—A common mistake is spacing treated deck boards when installing them. Treated decking usually contains moisture from the treatment plant which causes the wood to swell. As the wood cures, you can expect the boards to shrink. For this reason, it's best to install the deck boards tightly together and allow the spacing to occur naturally over time. If you provide spacing between the boards during installation, then once the deck cures and the wood contracts, the gaps will likely be too large. 5. Notches—Need to cut a notch around a post? First, measure and mark the cut-out on the board. Use a drill with a bit slightly larger than a jigsaw blade to drill pilot holes at the corners of the notch. Then use the jigsaw to cut out the notch. The pilot holes will allow room to make an easy 90-degree turn with the jigsaw blade. Remember to seal the inside of the notch (and any other cuts in the lumber) with a wood preservative. #treatedwood #decking #wood_deck #treatedpine #diydeck #deckbuilding
- Exotic Hardwoods turn a Decades-old Classic into a Work of Art
(guest post courtesy of William Chelak) When Eric Prestbo of Seattle, Washington began the remodel of the three-bedroom, 2,600 sq. ft. house the family purchased in 2016, he thought immediately of the showcase home he visited in Curitiba, Brazil more than a decade ago. Owned by his cousin John McGlocklin, the 2,700 sq. ft condominium, which occupied the entire 18th floor of a 19-story hi-rise, provided a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding city, coastal mountain range and magnificent Athletico Paranaense Futebol stadium. Prestbo’s focus, however, centered on the home’s gorgeous hardwood flooring which included four different exotic species: Cumaru, Tigerwood, Santos Mahogany and Canarywood as the signature piece. It also served as a showpiece for some of the exotic woods offered by Elemental Hardwoods, a company McGlocklin founded to provide wood flooring specialists, distributors and their customers with an eclectic mix of gorgeous, hardwood flooring products. “The view from John’s home was breathtaking,” says Prestbo. “It didn’t matter if you gazed at the beautiful scenery and cityscape or just sat there and took in the exotic hardwood flooring that flowed throughout the whole level. And that was the inspiration for my new home – a one-of-a-kind, artistic experience that grabbed the attention of all who entered.” To fulfill his vision, Prestbo redesigned his 1985 home with Canarywood, or Tarara Amarilla, as it is known in its source country, Bolivia. “With all its character, Canarywood is not a common wood by any means,” explains Prestbo. “Every piece is different. The patterns flow from a flaming blend of reds, oranges, and even purples on a strongly grain-figured base of golden brown. Once installed, the Canarywood floor then became a compelling work of art that set the stage for the rest of the remodel.” Distributed to wholesalers by Elemental Hardwoods, Canarywood has for centuries been used to design everything from cabinetry and furniture to musical instruments. In recent decades, this value expanded into wood flooring due to its intrinsic hardness (1920 janka), natural stability and uniquely beautiful aesthetics. In addition, Canarywood is the excellent option for any home seeking to showcase its flooring like natural artwork. Like most woods, Canarywood is moderately photosensitive and over time will “carmelize” as its bright rainbow colors evolve to a light-medium range of golden and caramel tones that retain its gorgeous grain figure and ages beautifully over time. Canarywood aged. Thanks to its natural stability and precise milling tolerances, the Prestbo floor was easily nailed to the plywood subfloor using 18-gauge cleats in this case without any glue assist. In solid 4-in. wide boards it is optional, and recommended with less naturally stable wood species, to use an S-bead glue assist with a quality adhesive; however it was deemed unnecessary in this case. “We’re currently refinishing the home around this flooring masterpiece,” adds Prestbo. “The Canarywood is just so beautiful. We love everything from the way it feels underfoot to the warmth it exudes from every room in the house – a true piece of art that has literally awed and inspired both guests and family.” Editor’s Note: Elemental Hardwoods was founded in 2000 to provide flooring specialists, distributors and their customers with an exotic mix of beautiful imported hardwoods, some of which are not available anywhere else in the country. - Vinyl Siding Installation
Vinyl siding has a lot to offer today's homeowners in terms of design and performance. Available in a huge array of colors and textures, from traditional clapboard to the look of board-and-batten or even shake siding with complementary trim details, vinyl allows builders and architects to achieve practically any architectural style. Want a house in the Cape Cod style? French Colonial? Georgian? Queen Anne or Greek Revival? Today's vinyl siding products can make it happen. Long-term durability and minimal maintenance requirements are two more big selling points. Designed to withstand winds of 110 mph or higher, vinyl siding has multiple attachment points for superior weather protection, and advanced UV-resistant coatings resist color fading. Manufacturers generally back the siding with a lifetime warranty to the original homeowner and with a prorated warranty of at least 50 years to subsequent owners. Vinyl siding offers all this protection, and you never need to paint, stain, caulk or re-paint it. When it comes to choosing a home's exterior cladding, good looks and performance are critical, but so is cost. Vinyl siding outshines other siding materials when compared to the total installed cost. According to the RS Means National Construction Estimating Software Tool, the average total installed cost per square (100 sq. ft.) is $393 for vinyl siding, $684 for fiber cement, $1,389 for wood siding, and a whopping $2,048 for brick in new construction (based on 2018 data). Installation Overview Abel and Laura Martinez of in Hoover, Alabama, added a wing onto their suburban home for an indoor infinity pool with the help of Lovelady Construction Co. When it came time to select cladding, the Martinez family chose Exterior Portfolio Market Square vinyl siding, made by Royal Building Products. Vinyl siding is engineered for quick and easy installation. The material is lightweight and simple to cut, and the Vinyl Siding Institute offers a free downloadable installation manual at vinylsiding.org. A confident DIY'er could tackle a small job, such as replacing siding on a damaged wall at ground level, but larger jobs such as the one pictured here are only for the pros. The deceptively simple act of fastening the siding panels shouldn't overshadow all the dangerous ladder work and logistical problems of carefully measuring, cutting panels to shape, and moving materials many feet off the ground. Furthermore, when it comes to wall transitions, flashing methods and finish details, there's a lot more to installation than simply nailing up a panel. Before installing any new siding, proper flashing details must be in place to shed water from the building envelope. The HIR team joined the installation crew of Lovelady Construction on site, where they were kind enough to show us how they get the job done. Do heights make you nervous? This one of many reasons a full-scale siding installation should be left to the pros. The worker is removing old siding before installing the new. Vinyl corner trim and j-channel have deep, square grooves to conceal the edges of the siding panels. The trim pieces are installed first at all wall transitions. When the bottom of the wall meets a floor or the ground, J-channel is installed along the bottom. Pro Tip: Keep a pair of tin snips handy to make quick adjustments to the J-channel and trim. The first panel of siding nests into the bottom J-channel. For elevated walls, install a starter strip along the bottom. The lower edge of the first panel locks into the starter strip. Fastening Everything depends on proper fastening of the siding. Because vinyl siding contracts and expands as the outside temperature changes, it's important not to fasten the panels tightly to the wall sheathing. When fastened loosely, the slotted holes in the nailing flange allow the panels to move freely as the temperature fluctuates. "Nailing the siding too tight is the easiest way to install it wrong," says Alvin Connell of Lovelady Construction, who prefers to use construction staples as a fast and secure way to hang the siding. Installers should allow 1/32-in. clearance (thickness of a dime) between the fastener head and the siding panel. Connell explains that if the panels are fastened too tightly, they can buckle and deform as the temperature changes. It is important, however, that the fasteners penetrate a minimum of 1-1/4-inch into a framing stud or furring strip. Start fastening in the center of the panel and work toward the ends. To avoid buckling, the siding panels also require at least 1/4-in. clearance at all openings and stops. (When installing in temperatures below 40 degrees F, increase the clearance to 3/8 inch.) These clearance gaps are concealed inside corner trim or vinyl J-channel. J-channel is a transition strip installed around all windows and doors prior to hanging the siding panels. The edges of adjoining siding panels insert into the channels for a clean, finished appearance. Proper fastening is critical so the panels can move with temperature fluctuation. The crew at Lovelady Construction prefers to use construction staples. Maintain a 1/32“ gap between the fastener head and the nailing flange. In general, vinyl siding installs from the bottom up, beginning with a starter strip (for elevated walls) or a J-channel (at floor transitions), and the siding panels follow, snapping together along the linear joints. When installing a panel, push up along its bottom edge until the lock is fully engaged with the piece below it for the full length of the panel. For horizontal panels, space fasteners a maximum of 16″ (12” for vertical panels). Check the alignment every few rows to make sure the siding is hanging straight and level. When working around windows, doors and similar obstructions, the panels must be cut to size. It is also important to use utility trim and punch locks at certain points where a nail hem has been cut off. The Lovelady guys work in tandem, with one installer taking measurements along the wall and hanging the panels, while the cut-man uses snips to trim the panels to shape and conveys them to the installer. Careful measurement and clear communication between workers is critical. Chip Lovelady uses tin snips to cut siding panels to size. Alvin Connell fits a cut panel around a window. Tight spaces such as this roof transition require careful measurement and cutting to properly install the flashing, trim and siding to protect the home. By working from the bottom up, it becomes necessary to trim off the nailing flange from the top panel, which eliminates those critical slotted holes. As a workaround, the Lovelady crew interlocks the trimmed top course to the lower course along its bottom edge, while its top edge tucks inside the trim channel along the eave. The installer then drives color-matched trim nails into the weep holes of the upper panel, which connects the two courses to each other without pinning the upper course to the sheathing. Soffits Ventilation is an important aspect of installing soffit along your eaves. Consult a local building official for the airflow requirements in your area. Vented vinyl soffit material can provide this airflow. To install the soffit, measure from the wall to the fascia board and subtract 1/2 inch to allow for expansion, then mark and cut the soffit panel to fit. Fasten at the fascia and wall through the nail flange and “V”-shaped groove, leaving space for expansion. To turn a corner, soffit panels can be mitered and supported with back-to-back J-channels. J-channel is often used to receive the edges of the soffit panels, but the Lovelady crew uses a different system, in which they bend their own L-shaped backer from aluminum coil stock. “When I shape the angle myself, it gives the soffit panels a tighter fit,” says Chip Lovelady, who forms and cuts the aluminum material on site. “A tighter fit is a stronger installation and prevents any loose panels that might rattle in high winds.” The crew installs the house-end of the soffit panels against the aluminum, then they sandwich the panels against it using a strip of J-channel for a tight fit, and the J-channel provides trim for the top siding course. To complete the installation, the Lovelady crew uses a sheet-metal brake to form color-matched aluminum stock into a tight-fitting fascia cap that protects against roof runoff. The aluminum cap can be fastened with matching trim nails. (If necessary to face-nail the fascia, it helps to drill holes for the trim nails to allow for expansion and reduce denting the aluminum.) To aid installation of the vented soffit, Chip Lovelady cuts aluminum angle trim to support the back of the soffit panels. When nailed to the sheathing, the aluminum angle provides backing for the soffit panels. The vented soffit is fastened to the fascia. J-channel fastened along the sheathing holds the soffit panels against the aluminum backer. The J-channel provides transition trim to conceal the edges of the top course of siding. The top siding course has its nailing flange removed, so Alvin Connell installs it by locking it to the lower course then nailing through the weep holes (without driving the nail into the sheathing). The Lovelady adds finishing details made of shaped aluminum sheet metal, such as this fascia cap that helps protect the house from wind and rain. Looking Back After the project was all buttoned up, the new Market Profile siding had a handsome look with a clean finish at all edge transitions. Using a network of ladders, scaffolds and multiple experienced workers, the Lovelady crew gave the Martinez house a whole new look in just a few days, and it’s a look that will last for years without the hassle of regular maintenance. SIDE NOTE Wall & Window Flashing for Vinyl Siding A code-approved flashing material should be installed around windows, doors, other openings, inside and outside corners, and the intersection of walls and roofing. The most important tip to remember when applying window flashing is that flashing should extend past the nail flanges of the window (or any accessory) to prevent water infiltration. The flashing must be long enough to direct water over the nail flange of the last full course of siding. To accomplish this, first apply the flashing on the underside of the window, then to the sides of the window (overlapping the bottom flashing), and finally, to the top of the window. - Indoor Pool Room that Mitigates Moisture Issues
Many homeowners go to to great lengths to keep water out of the home, but Abel and Laura Martinez of Hoover, Alabama, added a wing to bring the water inside. The new room built onto the rear of their house was designed to contain a hot tub/infinity pool for a relaxing place to take a dip and get some exercise. A massive concrete block foundation supported the pool. Heavy steel framing supported the house extension and its surrounding deck. The interior construction, however, is what caught the attention of the HIR staff. To manage the moisture of the indoor heated pool, the Canopy Construction crew employed a few techniques not often seen in residential remodeling. Waterproof Walls When it comes to building interiors, the choices are limited regarding which materials can withstand prolonged contact with moisture—airborne or otherwise. Most wood will swell, cup, or bow if it gets wet, while damp drywall will develop mold and mildew. For this reason, ceramic tile is a leading option for kitchens and bathrooms. Although it holds up to water, tile can be expensive to purchase and have installed, and the new wing addition had a lot of area to cover. To prevent moisture problems inside the pool room, the builders installed fiber-cement HardiePanel siding over the ceiling joists and wall studs. To balance cost with the need to mitigate any moisture problems, the Martinezes decided to cover the room's wall and ceiling framing with cement board. Often used as house siding or as tile backerboard, cement board is sold under brand names such as Hardie and Durock. For any readers unfamiliar with the material, cement board is a combination of cement and reinforcing fibers formed into sheets, 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 inch thick. Cement board is stronger and more impact-resistant than water-resistant gypsum drywall. The boards can be nailed or screwed to wood or steel studs, and on this project the material was used as the finish system itself. The boards are available as 4-by-8-ft. panels and also in trim boards of varying sizes. On this project, the rectangular Hardie trim boards were used to cover all the seams between panels, which gave the walls and ceiling the look of board-and-batten trim. Not only did this present an attractive option for the interior decor, but the cement board is 100-percent waterproof, resists cracking, rotting, swelling, damage from mold, and even comes primed for paint. Any irregularities in the framing can mirror through the finished cement board, so correct any problems before installing the panels. The fiber-cement siding is available in primed 4x8 panels which can be cut to size. Cement board may be cut with a carbide-tipped scoring knife, utility knife or cutting shears. If you use a grinder or circular saw, be sure to cut outside and use a Hardieblade intended for fiber cement. The panels can be nailed into studs or solid framing with corrosion-resistant fasteners. James Hardie recommends the use of quality, hot-dipped galvanized nails. The seams between panels were covered with 3-1/2-in. fiber-cement trim strips. The frame sections created by the trim boards gave the ceiling and walls a board-and-batten style pattern. The caulk and paint selections for the pool room contain mildewcide to perform well in damp environments. Waterproof Flooring The floor of the Martinez extension was a major concern because in addition to contact with steam and condensation, it would collect all the splashes and drips that result from using the pool. The first step in protection was to cover the subfloor with Ice & Water Shield, which is a waterproof underlayment membrane developed to protect vulnerable areas on a roof from water damage. The installers covered the entire subfloor with rolls of Ice & Water Shield, abutting the edges for a flat, continuous subsurface for the finished floor. The subfloor was covered from wall to wall with a protective layer of Ice & Water Shield. The next step called for installation of 100-percent waterproof flooring. Available exclusively from Floor & Decor, NuCore flooring looks and feels like wood but can be installed where real wood would fail. It comes ready to install right out of the box with no acclimation time needed. NuCore is a "luxury vinyl" product with a rigid core and cork bottom layer, which is soft underfoot and sound resistant. The planks assemble into a floating floor and are easy to install even for a DIY'er. No nails or glue are required. Begin by laying the first plank on the left side of the wall, leaving a 1/2 inch expansion gap. Install the next plank at an angle, clicking the tongue-and-groove joint into place. Use a hammer and tapping block to tap the end joints closed and continue down the row. To fit the last plank in the row, measure and score with a utility knife, then snap the plank along the cut. Pro-Tip: Jeremy Harris of Complete Quality Flooring (205-830-7392) custom-shapes his tapping block with a scraper so the block has the tightest fit against the flooring he will install. Start the second row with a leftover plank at least one foot long. Insert the tongue into the groove of the first row, then tap it into place to close the joint and eliminate any gaps between the long sides. Stagger the planks and continue until you reach the last row. The last row should be at least two inches wide and often needs to be cut to width. Measure and rip the last row to fit, then insert the cut planks against the wall. The expansion gaps around the flooring can be concealed with molding or trim. The block protects the boards as a hammer-tap closes the joints. Begin each new row with the cut-off plank from the previous row so the joints are staggered between rows. Dealing with Humidity The Martinez pool room was designed with sliding patio doors and more windows than wall space. On warm days, the 72-in. windmill-style ceiling fan and the open windows create ample airflow to help dispel the room's humidity and keep the living space fresh and comfortable. The pool also stays covered when not in use. But what about very cold days? To help manage humidity when the pool is uncovered and the windows are closed, the Martinezes use a commercial dehumidifier. To eliminate mold, mildew, and their associated odors, the Quest HI-E Dry 120 dehumidifier can be used stand-alone or in ducted installations for areas with heavy moisture loads. Take a Dip Once completed, the new pool room was a beautiful sight to behold. The centerpiece: The dual zone FX219s swim spa, which features a 5-seat hot tub and a spacious swim spa in one unit. You can operate both zones at once, or use only the hot tub or only the swim spa, depending on the season and your lifestyle. It's powered by six jets and provides ample space for a full-stride swim routine, so Abel and Laura can kick back and relax, or put in a good workout. Don't you want a pool room, too?
